Topman is a leading men’s fashion retailer with over 250 stores in the UK and a further 150 worldwide. The brand has been setting trends on the high street for nearly 40 years, and is renowned as a staunch supporter of fresh talent with a long history of collaboration with the best young designers.

Topman also caters for the premium market with its exclusive ‘Topman Design’ collection, ensuring it’s status as a peerless touchstone in the men’s fashion landscape.

The Challenge:

Topman’s latest high profile collaboration saw it working with Radio 1 DJ,
X Factor judge and style icon Nick Grimshaw. For his first foray into fashion design Nick conceived a 20-piece limited edition range that was inspired by his own personal style, love of unique menswear and most importantly – his pet bull terrier Pig, to whom he dedicated the collection.

Following on from the success of our ‘Spray On’ jeans Facebook app for Topman, Über was invited to create another to publicise the launch of Grimmy’s collection, and deliver something fun and shareable that would generate interaction through the brand’s Facebook page.

The Solution:

We quickly identified that people’s love for their dogs and pets was a universal truth that we could utilise to connect potential customers with Nick and his collection. Taking inspiration from the abstract illustration of Pig that featured as the range’s logo, we created 20 custom illustrations (15 dogs, plus a cat, fish, horse, rabbit and parrot) and built an app where people could create portraits of their own beloved companions in the style of Nick’s own.

Users were able to customise their creations with fashion accessories, choose background patterns from fabrics in the collection, and add the name of their pet in a custom plaque. The portrait could then be saved and added to an online gallery, as well as shared via social media, and daily winners were also selected to have their work of art printed on a bespoke Topman t-shirt.

The app was entirely designed and built in-house by Über and was compatible with all desktop, mobile site and smartphone app versions of Facebook.
