Making fashion more sustainable with the Global Fibre Impact Explorer

Insight

The fashion industry is one of the main contributors to the global climate and ecological crisis, second only to the oil industry. To help combat this, a team of Googlers embarked on a passion project to create a tool – the Global Fibre Impact Explorer (GFIE) – which would help leading fashion brands source more sustainable raw materials.

Approach

Beyond was brought on board to accelerate the design and build of the platform. Collaborating with Google, the WWF and Textile Exchange, we designed and engineered a product that shows fashion brands the environmental impact of their decisions and provides them with alternative, more energy-efficient sourcing solutions. We managed the process from concept to launch, developing an elegant, easy-to-use tool which combines Google Cloud’s technical capabilities with WWF’s conservation expertise.

Impact

Launched with the support of Stella McCartney, brands and retailers like Adidas, Allbirds, H&M Group, and VF Corporation helped to test and refine the programme, making sure it is beneficial for the industry. With such high-profile support and cutting-edge technology, the tool has the potential to make a vital difference to the fashion industry’s impact on our environment.
