We’re not like you, that’s why you’re like us
Media Bounty’s Monica Kulkarni shares what the Harris campaign can teach ethical brands about unity
With this latest project My Runway Group are manifesting their purpose, demonstrating the power of youth and just how important it is to lift the next generation up; to celebrate their talent and help them achieve their goals.
When it comes to representation, the conversation is broad and all encompassing. It is more than simply campaigns reflecting a lived reality; it extends to the people behind the camera and the brains behind the businesses. It’s about giving space to ideas from underrepresented communities, something My Runway Group is determined to do with a new initiative: 21 Youth Street.
This year to celebrate Black History Month, the group is showcasing diverse businesses founded by the black youth of the community through the 21 Youth Street project. It is a 30 day pop-up event on London’s Carnaby Street that aims to create more visibility for these businesses and their founders.
As Akil Benjamin has said, “If you want to make a difference, it’s not about donating money.” Benjamin is the Founder of M&C Saatchi’s Saturday School which launched a project during lockdown called #MentorBlackBusinesses. His belief is that empowering business founders and leaders is the most important step others can take.
These are examples of proactive action, of businesses handing over space to voices which aren’t typically heard in mainstream media or seen on shopfronts. The aim with 21 Youth Street is to showcase the talent of black youth and support them along their business journeys.
My Runway Group was set up as a youth empowerment organisation dedicated to inspiring and developing young creatives. With this latest project they are manifesting their purpose, demonstrating the power of youth and just how important it is to lift the next generation up; to celebrate their talent and help them achieve their goals.
The project kicks off on Friday 9th October 2020. To become part of the experience contact [email protected] for details.
