Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and so the Gate London partnered with Gay Times Magazine and LGBTQ helpline Switchboard on an awareness-raising project entitled The Flag We Shouldn’t Be Proud Of.

The campaign, fronted by Years & Years lead singer Olly Alexander, aims to increase awareness that 2 in 6 young LGBTQ people attempt to commit suicide as a result of bullying, oppression or discrimination. It focuses on the reality that LGBTQ people are more susceptible to mental health issues as a result of this abuse.

On the 40th anniversary of the original pride flag, the campaign’s visuals feel powerfully, hauntingly familiar, showing the renowned rainbow pride flag ripped, with two of the six colours missing. These colours are traditionally said to represent Life and Harmony.

The aim of the campaign is to break the silence and encourage young people to talk, both to one another and to those offering help. This move to conversation aims to prevent young LGBTQ lives from disappearing.
