The ‘Today is Gay’ free calendar plug-in celebrates LGBTQIA+ history 365 days a year.
With the politicisation of DEI stoking culture wars and leading to budget cuts, Creatives from Wieden+Kennedy London’s LGBTQIA+ group, The Ginger Beers, have launched a free calendar plugin that highlights important historical moments in the LGBTQIA+ community.
The calendar, ‘Today is Gay’ spotlights daily key LGBTQIA history and moments, offering an easy-to-use and celebratory alternative to the news agenda. The project aims to push back against corporations removing support from the LGBTQIA+ community from their comms, calendars and policies. Earlier this year, the Gay Times revealed that it has lost eight in 10 advertisers since 2024.
“As institutions flee from Pride, it’s been gutting to realise how fragile progress can be. It’s such a brutal reminder that their acceptance was always provisional,” says Wil Koslowski, Comms Planner at Wieden+Kennedy London.
Koslowski continues: “The Today is Gay calendar project has been a joyful way to turn loss into gain. Queer history is a never-ending fight to be loud, proud, and urgently visible, no matter the resources or support. If queer people are being quietly erased from corporate calendars? We’ll put their stories right back on everyone else’s! Good luck trying to erase this one.”
For every day of the year, the calendar includes a diary note of relevant history. The diary reminders range from significant dates of policy change, anniversaries of homophobic tragedies, to celebrations of LGBTQIA+ joy.
The calendar celebrates the high-five being invented by Glenn Burke, the first major league baseball player to come out as gay and how Michelangelo’s grandnephew switched all the masculine pronouns in the great sculptor's romantic poetry to feminine pronouns before publishing them posthumously.
The calendar is available as a free Google calendar plug-in, compatible with the work calendars of over 500,000 companies and millions of workers around the world. Details for installing the plugin can be found at www.todayis.gay, key dates will also be shared on the Today is Gay Instagram.
